The cosmic microwave background: a theorist’s perspective

چکیده

We review the role of the temperature anisotropies and polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in constraining the cosmological model. We put particular emphasis on the major milestones that have been passed, and CMB constraints on early-universe physics. We also look ahead, surveying what we hope to learn from the next generation of instruments targeting the small-scale imprint of reionization and gravitational lensing, and the large-scale polarization signature of gravitational waves.

Statistical physics for complex cosmic structures

Cosmic structures at large scales represent the earliest and most extended form of matter condensation. In this lecture we review the application of the methods and concepts of modern statistical physics to these structures. This leads to a new perspective in the field which can be tested by the many new data which are appearing in the near future. In particular, galaxy structures show fractal ...

The CMB spectrum: Perspective of observing spectral distortions

Spectral distortions (deviations from a Planck distribution) of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are potential sources of information on the thermal history of the Universe. So far however they escaped detection. We suggest a different observational approach useful to discover Bose–Einstein distortions. ! 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background

The properties of the cosmic microwave background radiation provide unique constraints on cosmological models, i.e. on the content, history, and evolution of the Universe. I discuss the latest measurements of the spectral and spatial properties of the cosmic microwave background radiation. Recent measurements from NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite, and from balloon-borne and gr...

Anisotropic universes with isotropic cosmic microwave background radiation

We show the existence of spatially homogeneous but anisotropic cosmological models whose cosmic microwave background temperature is exactly isotropic at one instant of time but whose rate of expansion is highly anisotropic. The existence of these models shows that the observation of a highly isotropic cosmic microwave background temperature cannot alone be used to infer that the universe is clo...
